Crags and routes
Frankenjura is one of the largest sport climbing areas of europe with more than 7000 routes and countless boulders on approximately 1000 crags.
The multiplicity the crags and individual routes shows the versatility of the climbing area regarding the crag conditions and the character of the routes. Frankenjura is considered as climbing area with tradition. At times of technical climbing used as training areas for more ambitious alpine climbs, became Frankenjura the birthplace of the ethics of redpoint ("Rotpunkt") in europe. You will find beside usually perfectly secured opened routes also alpine multi length routes from the beginning of climbing at the end of the 19th century. Many classical sport climbs of the 70's and 80's are well-known.
The majority the crag has a height of 12 till 25 meters. But some crags are higher and then often have classical lines.
And even in the last years were opened many low massifs with 10 meters and less than. Usually these routes are also perfectly protected. However often consist the difficulty of these routes of a hard single crux. The transition to bouldern seems to be flowing.
Due to the versatility of the Frankenjura-limestone one finds most different structures. The most well-known structure of Frankenjura is climbing with holes in all variations. In addition, there are many areas, in which climbing with slopern or ledges dominates.
